Pattern is the repeating of an object or symbol all over the work of art or design piece. Movement is done through positioning, emphasis, and other design elements mentioned in this article. The most important element should lead to the next most important and so on and so forth. Movement refers to the way the eye travels over a design piece. Such movement can be directed along lines, edges, shape, and colour within the work of art. Movement is the path or direction the viewer’s eye takes through the design, often to focal areas. In the image, it can be any shape, object, or text area that you deem to be the most important part of the message you are trying to convey to the viewer or audience. Emphasis means having a focal point for your graphic artwork. What does emphasis mean in graphic design? The definition of emphasis in graphic design is pretty straightforward actually. The area could be different in size, colour, texture, shape, etc. Usually the designer will make one area stand out by contrasting it with other areas on the design piece. EMPHASISĮmphasis is the part of the design that catches the viewer’s attention. This provides a sense of movement and dynamism to the eyes of the audience or viewer. Here, the elements of a design are placed in a circular pattern on the layout. It is usually found in websites, where two sides of a webpage differ from each other but contain similar elements. Asymmetrical balance is where the type of balance employs scale, contrast and colour to even out the flow of a layout. Symmetrical balance where the type of design is formed along a vertical axis and or horizontal axis, where the weight of the elements is evenly divided into both sides of the layout. In the context of graphic design, there are three types of balance. Designers can choose between a balanced design or off-balanced layout, depending on the purpose of the design. This refers to the distribution of the graphic design elements, such as shapes, text boxes and images, of a design evenly throughout a certain layout. In radial balance, the elements are arranged around a central point and may be similar. In symmetrical balance, the elements used on one side of the design are similar to those on the other side while in asymmetrical balance, the sides are different but still look balanced. If the design was a scale, these elements should be balanced to make a design feel stable in a visual sense.
